Cambridgeshire Short Mat Bowls News story

County Championship Four Wood Singles

01 Oct 2023

A total of 36 players had entered this years singles county championship of which 18 had elected to enter the national qualifier.

Unfortunately one player did not attend but thankfully Jane Stanford kindly stepped in as reserve at the last minute to ensure all players in all groups played the same number of competitive games during the round robin stages.

The 36 players were divided into 9 groups of 4 by way of open draw. Round robin games were played over 6 rounds with 9 live ends per game.

Winners from each group went through to play in the last 16 round along with the 7 highest losers across all groups.

After knockout rounds the final 4 placings were reached after some excellent bowls and competitive matches.

The final was won by Billy Chapman of Holbeach Bulldogs who defeated Bill Harrison from Doddington. Billy had elected to enter the nationals so all being well he should represent Cambridgeshire in April 2024 at Melton Mowbray.

The 3rd and 4th play off place was won by Chris West also from Holbeach who beat Phil Spry from Doddington.  Both Chris and Phil had also elected to enter the national qualifier so their names have been put forward to the ESMBA as 3rd and 4th placings.

Prizes were awarded to the top 4 positions.

The official umpire of the day Roly Fincham was awarded a token gift for all his hard work throughout the day.

All prizes were awarded by the CSMBA vice-chairman Charlie Waling who has kindly stood in for our Chairman who is still recovering from acute illness.

Overall a long but excellent day of competitive short mat bowls which was well supported by our members.  A few of our entrants had only been playing the game for a few months but it was great to see players with a wide range of bowling experiences playing against each other with what was a good day for short mat bowls and the CSMBA.

Following a very successful raffle and after all deductions a total of £93.31 profit will be credited to CSMBA funds.
