Cambridgeshire Short Mat Bowls News story

Cambridgeshire Ladies welcome England Ladies

01 Oct 2017

On the 1 October the Cambridgeshire County short mat bowls ladies team played the England ladies team.   There were 22 ladies on each side and they competed in three wood pairs, triples and fours.   Cambridgeshire’s home venue of March IBC was not available so the neutral venue of Doddington was chosen.

All games were very competitive with encouragement and cheering on both sides.  Even though Cambridgeshire lost overall it was a fantastic day and one which is scheduled to be repeated annually.

At the end line-up the Cambridgeshire Ladies presented their opposing players with a rose plant and the England team reciprocated with a key ring as a memento of the special day.

Jayne Thorpe, the Cambridgeshire Ladies Team Captain would like to thank Wisbech museum for their kind donation for the event.

5 October 2017 - The following letter was received from Lynn Dean, the England Ladies Captain.

"On behalf of George Clarke and the whole of the England Ladies team can I please thank you for a superbly organised and enjoyable day.

Can you please pass our gratitude to your team and everyone involved behind the scenes for the kind hospitality that they showed us and the competitive attitude they adopted.  The scores did not reflect the true picture of the day and I can recount both playing in and watching several really tight games where you couldn't predict the outcome.

Can you also please pass our appreciation to the WI who supplied such a variety of tasty food and to the lovely lady (and her two trusty male helpers) who kept us supplied with tea and coffee all day long.

We hope that you will continue to grow as a team and wish you the very best of luck in your future games.

Should any of your ladies wish to trial for the team next year we will be delighted to see them and I will forward a trial form in the near future.

Finally Jayne, a big personal "thank you" to you because without volunteers like yourself these events would never get organised.  So from one volunteer to another please believe your efforts are really, really appreciated."
