Cambridgeshire Short Mat Bowls News story

Successful Aussie Pairs

05 Mar 2022

18 teams contested an excellent day of bowls at MIBC on Saturday 5 March 2022.  All teams played 4 games and remarkably no team left the day without scoring at least a game point which is some achievement.

There were some late call-offs due to ill health and covid but all places were thankfully filled before play started.  Get well soon to all those that had to reluctantly withdraw.

Some teams were completely new to the ‘Aussie pairs’ format but had read the order of play and embraced the competition.  Unfortunately Brenda Waling had called off on Saturday morning due to sudden illness but David Wilcox took her place and teamed up as a late reserve with Charlie. This created some mirth as David was referred to as ‘Brenda’ for the rest of the day.

The committee organised a very successful raffle and a big thank you to all those players who donated raffle prizes and purchased tickets. A total of £75.00 profit will be banked from the raffle alone.

The top club as regards entrants was Wisbech St Mary with 5 teams and all places for the ‘Aussie Pairs’ were fully allocated in less than a week of advertising.

The committee is very grateful for the interest and will shortly be advertising a 3 wood pairs competition for Saturday 28 May so please enter for another good days bowling.

The ‘Aussie Pairs placings (1 to 4) were as follows:-

First : Charlie Waling & David Wilcox (Also known as Brenda). 8 points and + 34 shot difference.

Second: Maureen Bell & Josie Charter: 6 points and + 17 shot difference.

Third: Colin Buck & Craig Buck : 6 points and +15 shot difference.

Fourth : Linda Rogers & Geoff Ward: 6 points and + 5 shot difference
