County Singles Championship and National Qualifier

10 Sep 2022

24 entrants competed in this years county singles championship.  Players were split into 6 groups of 4 via open draw with the winners of each group together with the two highest losers overall going through to the knock out stages.

Group 1 winner : Joe Peters
Group 2 winner: Barry Stanford
Group 3 winner: Dave Bignall
Group 4 winner: Rosemary Richardson
Group 5 winner: Janet Goff
Group 6 winner : Colin Buck
The two highest losers were Craig Buck and Charlie Waling.

Charlie Waling made an unusually slow start in the group stages but got his act together to win through to the final against Colin Buck.  Neither Charlie nor Colin had previously held the title of CSMBA county singles champion so a new name was to go on the trophy.  Colin Buck eventually won a tense low scoring finals match.  The marker for the final was the chairman himself Mr. Barry Fox.

The 3rd and 4th place play off was won by Janet Goff who had a very good day overall ending with beating the steady Dave Bignall into 4th place.

The chairman presented prizes to the top 4 placings as well as some token prizes to guest markers, Lynn Bignall and Mary Fox.  Jo Locke received thanks for helping to run a successful raffle in the absence of the Maureen Bell the CSMBA raffle organiser.

A big thank you to our umpire Mr Roly Fincham who was kept very busy with some close measuring and some rule requests.

Cambridgeshire are normally allocated just one singles entry for the nationals and if that situation continues, Colin Buck will represent his county at Melton Mowbray in April 2023.

The day was played in good competitive spirit with plenty of evidence of good sportsmanship at March IBC.  All in all a good day was enjoyed by all participants and with less head visiting than perhaps usually experienced at these events the day was all over in relatively good time.
